Disability Awareness Week

Disability Awareness Week aims to promote access to all community events for people with disability; advocate for the rights of people with a disability and support the artistic, cultural and sporting aspirations of people with disability.

Darwin City Council celebrates Disability Awareness Week during the first week of September each year. Disability Awareness Week aims to promote access to all community events for people with disability; advocate for the rights of people with disability and support the artistic, cultural and sporting aspirations of people with disability. The week also provides an opportunity for service providers to distribute information regarding their services and activities. It aims to encourage the community to think more broadly and creatively about what people with a disability can accomplish and how they can contribute to the diversity and fabric of our community.

The Darwin City Councils Disability Awareness Week committee call for nomination for Ambassadors to the program. The role of the ambassador varies from person to person and they each have different roles depending upon their interests. This year Angela Budulngulil a Somerville service user was invited to be one of the Ambassadors. During the week many events and activities are scheduled.

In Angela’s official role she attended the opening of Disability Awareness Week which was held at Parliament House. She assisted with handing out programs and was presented with a certificate that valued her contribution to Disability Awareness Week 2014. Next on Angela’s agenda was to attend and assist at the Health and Wellbeing market. Angela’s participation at this event included handing out Somerville Community Services information and merchandise and conversing with the public. Whilst Angela mingled with the crowd many people recognised her from her public profile and from her presence at the opening of the event, these people ensured that they approached her and many congratulated her on her role.

Last but not least Angela attended the Deckchair Cinema which was a free event showing the film ‘The Crash Reel’. Angela took great pride in attending these events and enjoyed being in and with the community. Somerville staff are extremely proud of her contributions to the events of the week.
