Verna’s Return to Country

Somerville provides Support Coordination services to assist NDIS participants to implement their plans and achieve their goals.
Somerville’s Support Coordination team recently facilitated a memorable Return to Country for one of our wonderful clients, Verna.
Verna is a vibrant woman who grew up in the remote community of Numbulwar. Verna was a leader in her community and a highly respected elder.
Sadly, Verna suffered a stroke many years ago which resulted in an acquired brain injury.
Verna has since continued to live in Darwin to receive the ongoing care and support she requires.
Verna hasn’t been able to visit her homelands to see her family for seven years, however, as a result of the work put in by her dedicated Support Coordinator Blossom, Verna was able to return home and stay on country for three days to spend much needed time with her loved ones.
The effort required to facilitate a Return to Country like this is extremely complex and requires collaboration from all stakeholders and support services to pull it off.
The role of a Support Coordinator can often be incredibly challenging and at times underestimated; however being able to successfully facilitate these important Returns to Country for our clients makes the days so worth it.
Thank you to our Support Coordinator Blossom for her dedication in making this trip work, and THANK YOU to Somerville’s entire support coordination team and all engaged stakeholders for your collaboration in making this Return to Country the success it was.
