NAIDOC 2023: Colin’s Return to Country
To celebrate NAIDOC Week, we want to highlight a recent return to country trip undertaken by one of our Katherine-based residents.
Colin is a Jawoyn man from Wugularr (Beswick) living with a disability. In his home community Colin is a much loved and respected elder, but because of his complex needs he lives in Katherine so he can receive care and support.
Somerville recently facilitated a day trip for Colin to return to Wugularr. It was an emotional and heartwarming reunion, with many family members coming to see him. His family also took him to visit Jallaluk Billabong, an important cultural site where Colin caught bream, cod, and turtles as a child.
The importance of this trip both for Colin and the community reinforces the importance of respecting our elders, including those living with disability.
